By 2020, we’re aiming for 100% of our leather products to support Leather Working Group rated tanneries, ensuring better environmental practices.
Ensuring your leather is crafted using better practices, Country Road is committed to improving traceability and promoting sustainability in our leather supply chain.
We’re committed to sourcing the best natural fibres, and that includes using the finest quality leather.
As a first step, we partnered with Leather Working Group in 2017, working with our suppliers to map the leather supply chain and source leather from tanneries undertaking better environmental practices.
Leather Working Group rated tanneries must adhere to a strict protocol – focusing on energy and water usage, waste management and the control of harmful chemicals.
It’s an extremely important partnership for us, and as of 2019, Country Road is the only major Australian fashion retailer to hold membership of the Leather Working Group.
Currently, over 90% of Country Road’s leather products are sourced from tanneries rated by the Leather Working Group.
We require that all leather is sourced as a by-product of the meat industry, meaning we only use animal skins that would have otherwise gone to waste. We also ban the use of all exotic animal skins and any endangered species which appear on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) or the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species.
In addition to this, Country Road is involved in the Textile Exchange Beef and Leather Working Group with the objective of partnering with a diverse range of stakeholders to address the complex issues within the leather and beef supply chain.
