A soothing, neutral colour palette in the bedroom not only helps when winding down after a busy day, but it's also incredibly chic. Here, Talisa Sutton, editor of Badlands blog, shares her pre-sleep beauty routine and the treasures and creative inspirations that she keeps on her nightstand.
What is your ideal way to unwind at the end of the day?
I'm working at home most nights, so my favourite way to unwind before bed is to make a cup of tea and catch up on some reading. If I have time, I'll watch something on Netflix (which is my guilty pleasure) or I practice French using the Duolingo app – I find this quite relaxing.
How would you describe your interior style?
I like to keep my bedroom palette quite neutral so it's predominantly white which I find quite calming. I balance it with accents of black and natural wood, so things don't feel too clinical. I would describe my interior style as Scandi-minimal with a hint of Californian-eclectic. I love to mix in shearling, texture and lots of natural greenery.
Can you share your pre-sleep beauty routine?
I always wash my face before bed using Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser. I then apply Sunday Riley Good Genes Serum and my pharmacy favourite, Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturiser for sensitive skin. I also use a little bit of Grown Alchemist eye cream, and in winter I'll sometimes mix their facial oil in with my moisturiser too. For my body, I like to use coconut oil or cocoa butter right before bed and leave it to work overnight.
What book are you currently reading?
I'm reading Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walters after a good friend recommended it to me. It's set between the Italian coastline in the early 60s and a present-day Hollywood – what's not to love? I also keep a few favourite fashion tomes close by — they're a go-to for inspiration. At the moment it's Chloe: Attitudes by Sarah Mower, Cowboy Kate and Other Stories by Sam Haskins and Influence by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
Describe what's on your nightstand:
An inspiring space is a relaxing one for me. I always try to have fresh flowers and a scented candle on my nightstand. On the weekend I usually visit the markets to pick up a bunch of flowers, but every now and then I love to get a special delivery from a florist. MyFlowerMan (who delivers straight to your door) put together this pretty bunch on my nightstand. I started designing my first print collection in January – alongside greenery, they are an easy and fun way to decorate your space. My background is in editorial graphic design and I have always loved illustration. One other thing I like to keep close to me are my delicate jewellery pieces. There are a few I wear every day – I only take them off to sleep and keep them in a little bowl on my nightstand.
