The town of Mollymook, which is about a three hour drive from Sydney on the South Coast of New South Wales, might enjoy it’s boom time in the hazy days of summer but it’s in the throes of winter that a break by the sea proves to be most invigorating.
Stay: Bannisters By The Sea
While there’s no shortage of motels and Airbnbs in the area, this was a very special break for us being one of the last times we’d get to go away alone before our Little Lono arrives. So we decided to opt to experience Mollymook through the eyes of interior stylist and former designer Collette Dinnigan.
There’s no way else to sum up the penthouse suite other than to say it’s impeccable. Every detail, from the Aerin Lauder wall fittings, the Carrera marble basins, even her insistence that fresh flowers always greet new visitors, has been perfected. The floors in the bathroom are even kept as a toasty 26 degrees; the ultimate luxury.
In summer there’s the wide Hamptons-inspired balcony to lounge on but in winter there’s nothing so romantic and sitting by the marble fireplace and listening to the waves crash along the shore.
This quaint town is just a 10-minute drive from Mollymook but provides the perfect antidote if you’re looking for an alternative to the pristine surf and sand.
Here you’ll see the rolling green pastures of rural dairy farms, charming antique stores and sophisticated furniture stores and clothing boutiques. Stop in at Pilgrims Cafe for one of their iconic chocolate thickshakes.
Watch: The Sunset Along Mollymook Beach
Summer and the hot golden beaches that go along with it are a definitive part of Australian cultural identity. However, there’s a depth and solemn beauty that’s heightened when the temperatures cool and the crowds disperse. The coastline takes on a whole new mood as the wind whips through your hair and you hear the sands singing in the wind.
Starting and ending your day strolling along the white sands of Mollymook Beach is like giving your soul a bit of a wash out. The cool air wakes you up while the sun warms your bones. You’ll also most likely spy dolphins and whales spouting in the distance, which adds to the whole beauty of it.
