Come on get happy: we’ve teamed up with the joyous people at Happy Socks to create a small collection exclusive to Country Road. A Swedish label that favours creative design and quality craftsmanship, Happy Socks was founded in 2008 with a simple doctrine: turn an everyday essential into something colourful and fun. Here, we chat to the co-founder and CEO, Mikael Söderlindh, about his happiness philosophy.
Happy Socks is still relatively young, how did the concept for the company came about?
"It all came about quite simply - we had the idea to create a brand named Happy Socks and create well-designed socks since they seemed to be somewhat of a forgotten item. We started Happy Socks in the spring of 2008 and became the playful pioneer of colourful socks. We created the segment of designed socks within the sock industry, and by doing so we became market leaders of fashionable designer socks globally. What was often regarded as clothing unworthy of creativity became a well-tailored everyday essential. It all happened quite quickly! I suppose we spotted a gap in the market and filled it with a much-needed product that we packed full of love."
What’s your favourite thing about collaborating with another brand?
"We feel our collaborations really demonstrate what we are all about. Creativity is about letting go of rules and trusting your instincts, which is something we try to instil in everything we do. It has to be something that’s not so expected, something that’s a little bit different. I think the diversity of the collaborations we’ve done has been really fun. What’s the common denominator for all of them is that they share our values of creativity, self-expression, playfulness and individuality."
All your designs are so individual and unique; where do you find inspiration?
"We have a lot of energy and find it fun to surprise ourselves. We don’t follow the latest trends and seem to find inspiration in everything and nothing. A lot of our inspiration comes from our travels and meeting different personalities all over the world."
How would you describe the Happy Socks design philosophy?
"Happy Socks features an almost endless variety of models and designs, using a wide spectrum of colour combinations and original patterns, allowing you to express your personality and be yourself. We value the unique personality of each individual and care for self-expression. Simply put: there’s a pair of high-quality socks and underwear for every occasion, mindset and style. "
What role do you want Happy Socks play in people’s wardrobes?
"We believe in creativity, individuality, self-expression and having fun. We want to bring unexpected colour and design to an everyday essential, and create a pair of high-quality socks and underwear for every occasion, mindset and style."
Do you have a favourite pair?
"It’s impossible to pick one pair as it depends on my mood that day!"
