Is there anything better than a good spring clean of your wardrobe? While creating space in your life helps you feel organised and renewed come the new season, the actual clean-out component is not always simple. We asked stylist Fleur Wood of How To Wear It for her rules when it comes to cleaning out closets, and then of course, which basics we should invest in for the new season. As the adage goes; it’s out with the old and in with the new.
The new season is almost here, what do you love most about spring?
“It’s my favourite time of the year. Not only is it so much easier to get dressed in spring, the beautiful fresh air instantly puts you in a happy mood. I also love not having to wear layers and layers of clothing. A good pair of jeans, a white shirt, some chic flats and your outfit is done!”
You’re an expert in wardrobe cleansing. What are your rules for a big spring clean?
“Be ruthless, but ultimately there is nothing wrong with holding onto sentimental pieces.”
“I believe you must try on the piece before you consider getting rid of it, you may find you still like it but have simply forgotten about it.”
“If you love an item but don’t know how to wear it, chances are you just don’t have the right piece in your wardrobe to wear it with; so put it aside for when you do. ”
“I have a ‘one in, one out’ rule. That is; if you purchase a new item of clothing, try and then remove an item from your wardrobe and donate it to a charity.”
What is the best thing about a wardrobe clean out?
“When you have nothing to wear but have a wardrobe full of clothes, then a wardrobe clean out is what you need. It will help you clear space; you’ll find some hidden gems you forgot that you had; and you’ll identify the missing pieces – the key to a versatile wardrobe is ensuring you have the right essentials.”
What do you think are the top five basics every woman should have in her wardrobe:
“Nothing beats a stripe tee. They’re perfect for relaxed weekend looks, but can also be easily be elevated with a tailored blazer. If you are not into stripes, a plain white tee is a great alternative.”
“Blazers are essential. My blazer is a bit like my uniform; I can wear it with almost everything I own and it instantly dresses up an outfit. I love the confidence it gives me.”
“Everyone needs a white shirt in their wardrobe: they are versatile and will always make you look polished. It’s important to find the perfect one for you, it must be the right cut to suit your body shape.”
“Well-fitting jeans are an absolute wardrobe essential: they can be dressed up and down and worn with just about anything. I always suggest owning both a blue and black pair.”
“The perfect spring layer, a beautiful lightweight knit is a must for trans-seasonal weather.”
