Helena Vestergaard and Nathan Webster, along with their two gorgeous children, River and Sway, have created a beautiful life together. Residing in the Northern Beaches, they live a conscious life that aims to have as low of an impact as possible on the environment around them. Here, in the spirit of the festive season, we spend a morning at their home.
This is Sway’s first Christmas, how are you planning to celebrate together as a family?
"Yes it is. This Christmas we are planning on just spending it at home. We have the beach, our dogs and each other."
Are there any special traditions that you and Nathan have, that you would like to continue with your new family through the holidays?
"Just surfing as much as we can!"
You are passionate about sustainable living, was there a particular moment that ignited that interest or has it been a lifelong journey?
"I have always been into sustainability. Living next to a beautiful coast line definitely makes me more passionate about anything that will affect the earth."
Could you please share any tips to reducing your environmental impact through the festive season?
"Try not to consume or buy a whole heap of meat/poultry/eggs/dairy and seafood. I know that it’s a given that people are going to eat these things but it’s important not to over consume on your amounts and be sure to buy it from really good quality farmers (grass fed, free range, organic) It makes a huge difference even if you have to fork out a little more money for it. "
"Another given is the amount of single use plastic. Try to avoid it, use recycled paper for wrapping presents, eco friendly plates and cutlery instead of plastic. Try not to buy too many plastic toys for your children or plastic based gifts, instead gift plastic free dish scrubs and brushes, inspire people to use less plastic! Go to an op shop and buy second hand cups or anything else you need more of instead of disposable ones, then you can return them after the festive season and you would have also made a nice donation."
What is your approach to styling over the Christmas period – are there particular pieces you’re drawn to?
"I’m definitely a comfort first person, I love wearing white and colours this time of year. In Australia it’s always hot so being in a breezy dress and sandals is my go to."
What do you look for when curating wardrobes Sway and River?
"Definitely comfort first as well, light natural cottons and easy shoes. I would love to say that they are always in curated outfits but the truth is I’m usually just trying to get anything on them so we can actually get out the door most of the time."
