Bianca's morning stretches to get the blood flowing
Do you often wake up feeling stiff and in need of a good stretch? This is due to something called fascia, which sets in over our muscles as we sleep and results in stiffness the next day. As we mature with age, the stiffness often gets increasingly worse. The best way to overcome this is to give your body a good stretch or a good workout to melt that fascia away throughout the day. In doing so you become more agile and your ability to move increases, thus making exercise a whole lot easier.
So, how do I like to stretch in the morning and what’s my go-to routine? I always incorporate a few heart and hip opening poses into my 30 minute yoga practice. I start with Sun Salutes A and B to warm up my body, then head into the below poses.
1.The Mermaid or One-Legged Royal Pigeon pose (pictured above).
This is a really strong pose and it forces me to stop, focus and breathe (which is one of the mantra’s I live by in order to get through my busy days at work).
This is one of my all-time favourite stretches. I like to hold this for as long as I possibly can — it makes me feel really free and open.
3. The Wheel Pose
I hold this one for 50 seconds at the end of my practice. Being upside down really gets the blood flowing to the head so, I have more clarity and alertness.
Stretching is so important first thing in the morning. Not only does it increase your ability to move that day, but it also gets the blood flowing and makes you more productive for the day.
